This morning I happened to get "You and Me" by the Moody Blues stuck in my head. As I turned the lyrics over, a few of them just struck me as being apropos for LOST. I've bolded those and added some comments in brackets:
There's a leafless tree in Asia
Under the sun there's a homeless man
There's a forest fire in the valley
Where the story all began
[I don't think the Heart of the Island is in a valley, but it would very appropriate if it was.]
What will be our last thought?
Do you think it's coming soon?
Will it be a comfort
Or the pain of a burning wound?
[I think of Jack, of course, who had a burning wound but thoughts of comfort as he watched his friends leave the Island]
CHORUS
All we are trying to say
Is we are all we've got
You and me just cannot fail
If we never, never stop
[This brings to mind the live together, die alone ethos and the idea that the Lostaways are uniquely connected to one another through their experience on the Island].
You're an ocean full of faces
And you know that we believe
We're just a wave that drifts around you
Singing all our hopes and dreams
We look around in wonder
At the work that has been done
By the visions of our father
Touched by his loving son
[Hard not to think of Christian, Jack, and the sideways.]
